We do things different

The whole goal of opening NPL Bread Shed was to take the stigma away from being a food bank. To help provide people with a community atmosphere that was warm, welcoming, none-judgemental.

Why we do what we do ..

As a team, we have had our fair share of life experiences, and we know how it feels to struggle to make ends meet and feed your families on very little income. When we opened NPL Bread Shed, we wanted to never let that stigma get in the way of people using a food bank. That is why we produced a community pantry store that mimics an actual shop. This way, you can come shop, chat with your neighbours over the beans and peas.. Just like you would in any store or supermarket, and feel comfortable doing your shopping.

Let's go back to where it began..

NPL Bread Shed started as 3 shelves behind the community centre door, which expanded so quickly within a year. So much so that we had to make the decision to give up our small office to turn it into a pantry. As the community centre grew in members, the pantry members did too.

Due to the every increasing food prices and the cost of living skyrocketing, we had so much demand for the use of our little pantry. This is where myself and Abi had to come up with a solution, fast! People were struggling to make ends meet and the amount of food waste that was happening in supermarkets was ridiculous (still is) but we wanted to help more people and save this surplus food from going to waste.

With much determination, hard work and passion we went on a mission to partner with supermarkets, local businesses and other means of collecting surplus food. One of them suppliers being Fair Share, who provides us with a weekly delivery of chilled, frozen and packaged foods that otherwise would have gone to waste. Having this partnership with Fair Share provides us with the opportunity to provide families with low-cost food and FREE fruit and vegetables.

Once we had the partnerships in place, we then needed somewhere to put all the food. So we came up with the idea of turning our all weather canopy that is situated in the backyard, into a fully-fledged cabin to house a mini social supermarket.
